The Black Student Union hosts a free karaoke night March 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Clark Student Center Comanche Suite in hopes to bring all students together to belt out their favorite songs.
“Karaoke night will give students a chance to come together and be goofy,” Christina Horn, junior in nursing and president of BSU, said. “Music in my eyes sets your emotion, whether you’re singing or just listening to it. It expresses how you are feeling in that moment. This karaoke night will give students the opportunity to express themselves on a serious note or if they just chose to be silly. I mean, who doesn’t love music?”
The Black Student Union will sponsor this free karaoke event and also provide refreshments. The Black Student Union plans to attract students from different cultural backgrounds by offering them a wide variety of music to perform and then unite them through the power of music.
“There are so many different styles of music out there,” Tyera Breeze, freshman in dental hygiene, said. “Karaoke is the best way to sing your favorite song, from any genre, without being too harshly criticized. When you karaoke you know it is a judge-free zone. It’s a chance to be you and show your stuff. I personally enjoyed the karaoke night from last semester and it is always a great kick-start when it comes to meeting new people.”
The Black Student Union recently hosted a slew of events during Black History Month, including a talent show and a skate night at the Roller Plex. They want to c0ntinue the success of those events by providing more avenues for students to come together and socialize in a fun and positive way.
“There are so many negative activities, such as drugs and underage drinking, that entice students across campus,” Barbra McGuire, freshman in criminal justice, said. “The Black Student Union wants to promote a positive, fun and active event on campus that will keep students busy and out of trouble.”
Next, the Black Student Union will be hosting a dodgeball tournament March 28 at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Center. Students will be allowed to create teams of up to seven friends and compete for a prize. Registration and waiver forms must be filled out by March 12.
