One of the most well-known holiday traditions in Wichita Falls is back. Each year, The Fantasy of Lights displays are showcased with characters from children stories, fairy tales and several holiday themes.
This year, the committee is adding two new displays at the MSU-Burns Fantasy of Lights tradition. The “Nutcracker Carousel” created by Don Henschel and “A Toy’s Christmas” built by Paul and Sue Ernst.
“Well they’ve never been seen before. They are brand new and we haven’t had a new display in 10 years, so we are very excited to have these,” Randy Canivel, Fantasy of Lights coordinator, said.
The committee is still setting up the event, but more than 35 uniquely created displays will light up the campus on Dec. 6. Without the support of donors, student volunteers, and the community, the tradition wouldn’t be possible. Canivel says they are making some modifications to the older displays as well.
“Well the ferris wheel and the little engine that could have been completely rebuilt by Carrigan Career Center. They basically made the ferris wheel completely steel so it looks brand new, but you could never tell because we repainted it,” Canivel said.
The committee raises money from donors to operate the event, and this year organizers collected more than $50,000 to keep the tradition going.
“I always see it every year, I just don’t have a chance to go. They all look really interesting and I like how the whole school is lit up and stuff,” Lauren Statham, a junior in criminal justice, said.
