After receiving a call from a mother in desperate need of diapers, Leigh Anne Hope, visiting professor of social work, and members of her child advocacy group Hope Connections decided to hold a diaper drive to fill up diaper banks at local non profits which deal specifically with children and parents.

“These agencies are… they’re all non-profits so they have small budgets and if they’re taking money out of their budget to buy diapers or hygiene items… that’s money that could be spent on counseling or program services,” Hope says.

Hope doesn’t take credit for the success of the diaper drive, which has so far resulted in the collection of more than 6,000 diapers. She says the social work students played a major
role in the drive.

“They’ve taken off. And they’re behind it, and they’re excited. They’re leading it and their generous hearts are bringing in the diapers,” Hope says.

One such student is Machaela Welch. The junior member of Chi Omega used her connections with the Greek community to collect diapers for the drive.

“Each chapter member went out and bought diapers and donated them and as Chi Omega’s community service is a big thing for us,” Welch says.

Welch, a member of Hope Connections, says the entire organization is doing a great job raising diapers and awareness.

“We just have such a strong passion for child advocacy, but it’s such a good feeling knowing that I’m making a difference whether it be small or big. It’s just a really great feeling,” Welch says.
