Residence halls affected by water outage

Due to a water pipe on Louis J. Rodriguez Drive that was hit during contractor work, Legacy Hall, Sunwatcher Apartments and Sundance Court have experienced an unforeseen water outage.

Kristi Schulte, director of residence life and housing, said she was notified of this event around 2:30 p.m. After being notified, the housing department staff “mobilized within five minutes” to notify residents through email and social media.

“At this time, we’re going hour by hour. They do anticipate that the problem — our water service — should be restored to the residence halls this evening,” Schulte said.

A temporary solution for residents wanting to take a shower or use the restroom until the problem is fixed is to utilize the Wellness Center, Killingsworth and Pierce halls.

Chaunelle Joseph, social work freshman, did not like this solution. She discovered the water was not working in her room after attempting to use the restroom.

“That sucks that we have to walk all the away over there,” Joseph said.

Julianne Plambeck, nursing sophomore, actually planned to use the Wellness Center depending on the length of the outage.

“I’m okay with it but, I prefer taking my showers here in Legacy because it’s close to my room,” Plambeck said. “And I have access so I don’t have to carry all my things to the Wellness Center.”

Schulte understood students’ comments, but said there weren’t other options.

“We don’t necessarily like having to do that either, but we do appreciate their cooperation in the event of an emergency and we appreciate that that they realize it is a short term problem,” Schulte said. “We’re working as quickly as possible to fix it.”
