Softball’s “Swing for the Cure” event postponed
The softball program’s “Swing for the Cure” benefit for the Susan G. Komen foundation, set for the April 9 game against Texas-Permian Basin, was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. Game times for the Tuesday games were moved up to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the benefit was moved to April 19.
The softball team took both games in the Tuesday’s double-header, besting Permian Basin 3-2 in a comeback effort in the first game, and posting a shutout 8-0 victory in the second game.
The team improves to 31-12 overall with an 8-7 Lone Star Conference record. The team travels to Stephenville, TX on April 12 for a three-game bill against rival Tarleton State. Softball’s next home stand will be from April 16-April 20, when the team hosts Cameron and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Men’s golf finishes third at Dallas Baptist Classic
Despite a three-stroke lead going into Tuesday’s final day of the Dallas Baptist Classic, the men’s golf team fell to a third place finish.
The tournament snapped the team’s string of five-straight first or second place finishes.
The team’s lead diminished due to shooting 24-over as team through the first nine-holes due to high winds, but the men were able to pull themselves together on the back nine, as they rallied to just one stroke over par to finish with an 893 tournament total, six strokes behind first place Oklahoma Christian, and two strokes behind host team Dallas Baptist.
Sophomore Derek Oland and freshman Santiago Gomez tied for 13 overall, shooting 224, with senior Antonio Herran tying for 19 with 226.
Jeremy LeGuen finished with 229 to take 29 place, and freshman Ian Gallagher finished with 237.
The team will now prepare for the Lone Star Conference Championships, set to take place in Ft. Worth at the Golf Club at Champions Circle on April 15-16.
Moore leads women’s golf at U.S. Women’s Invitational
Sophomore Brenna Moore tied for 13 with a score of 235 to help lead the women’s golf team to a seventh-place finish at the United States Women’s Invitational at the Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on April 8-9.
The team finished their first 54-hole tournament of the season with a score of 959.
Finishing behind Moore for the women were Kendra Whittley, who tied for 26 with a score of 241 and Taylor Klutts, who claimed 31 with a score of 244.
Lauren Romines followed close behind with a score of 245 to tie for 32, while Lindsay Burkhart rounded the team effort out with a score of 246 to tie for 34.
The women’s next tournament will be April 8-9 for the Lone Star Conference Championships in Ft. Worth.
Louisville beats Michigan in NCAA Final
The Louisville men’s basketball program beat Michigan’s men’s team 82-76 April 8 in Atlanta to win the 2013 NCAA National Championship.
The win marks Louisville’s third national championship, and its first since 1986.
Michigan’s Trey Burke, the AP National Player of the year, led the Wolverines with 24 points, but Luke Hancock came off the Cardinals’ bench to pour in 22 points to led Louisville to the victory.
