Competition and rivalry is part of fraternity’s past
The Interfraternity Council at Midwestern is striving for a new level of excellence on campus and is taking an active role in enhancing Greek Life. In January, our council decided we needed to be the men who start the transformation of the fraternities and take our performance to the next level.
The image of fraternities on campus has been surveyed in the past and found to be neither horrible nor outstanding.
Our Greek system is very unique and has characteristics that large schools do not have.
We have the ability to know everybody in our chapter, most people in other chapters and in some cases alumni from other chapters.
This characteristic we possess allows us to be able to receive real support from other members and it has enabled IFC to successfully motivate and empower the fraternity men to make their chapters better.
By taking advantage of the features that make us different, we have had remarkable success compared to the past few years.
Greek Life image is very sensitive and can easily be tarnished, even after great success.
One way we have improved our image is by uniting the fraternities. Generally, there are rival fraternities and sororities on every campus, but we have worked hard to eliminate those rivalries. This helps create respect for not only our own members, but also for fellow fraternity men.
A presentation hosted by IFC was given to the faculty and staff members recently to show our desire to gain their support for Greek Life and to show them our support for their efforts.
As Greeks, one of our main goals is to achieve high academic performance and the help of our professors can support this.
In the future, we hope to have events where professors tutor Greek students and in return we show them our gratitude through appreciation events.
Our council has also drafted the idea of having Greek members volunteer to serve in the library the week before and during finals week to keep the library open twenty-four hours a day for all students on campus, free of charge. This is another event for which we specifically need faculty and staff support and have received more support than we could have asked for.
Our council has reached out to the Panhellenic Council and the Multicultural Greek Council, the governing body of both sororities and multicultural fraternities and sororities respectively, in order to have more support and in turn a larger impact on campus. Collaboration between the three councils has proven to be exponentially helpful, as we all share common goals.
The Greeks at Midwestern have more motivation right now than ever to show everybody what we do best; make men better men, make women better women, give back to our community and live by the values established by our founders.
