Indoor track prepares for LSC championship
The women’s indoor track and field program will travel to Lubbock to participate in the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.
The meet will be held at Texas Tech University’s indoor track from Feb. 23-24.
The women will only participate in the running events, but will still be scored as a full team.
The team hopes to have runners advance to the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship in Birmingham, AL from March 7-9.
Once indoor track season is over, the team will begin gearing up for outdoor track season. Their first meet will be on Mar. 23 at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Women’s tennis picks up a win in season opener
The No. 38 women’s tennis program opened their season with a 7-2 win against No. 49 St. Mary’s at the MSU Tennis Center on Feb. 16.
The team picked up all three doubles points with an 8-4 win by Madeline Schorlemmer and Lauren Pineda against Mariana Rong and Christina Lopez, an 8-4 win by Taylor Coffman and Sarity Adhikary over Valentine Lambrechts and Felicity Delgadoand a 8-4 win by Kayla and Kendra Casey against Bryant and Ariana Saldana.
Schorlemmer, Pineda, Kayla Casey and Fatima Clementino picked up wins for the Lady Mustangs in singles play. Schorlemmer won her tmatch against Lopez 7-6 (4), 6-3. Pineda dominated Joanie Bryant 6-1, 6-2, Casey took down Lambrecths 6-4, 7-5 and Clementino beat Elisah Bryant 7-5, 6-3.
The team will join the men’s program on the courts this Friday when they take on Tyler Junior College at 2:30 p.m. in the first of three matches over the weekend. The teams will also host Dallas Baptist and East Central (Okla.) on Saturday.
Cycling team finds success at Austin Road Race
The MSU Cycling Team had a successful weekend at the University of Texas at Austin’s Road Race Weekend on Feb. 16. The team placed first overall, and they now lead the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference (SCCCC) overall series after the first of eight events.
Individual achievements for the team stretched across the board, as the team had someone place in the Women’s A division and the Men’s A, B, C and D divisions.
In the Women’s A division, Jessica Prinner placed first in the women’s road race and criterium events, and Ashley Weaver placed third in the road race. Prinner and Weaver, along with Claire Routledge placed first in the team time trial.
In the Men’s A division, Tony Baca, Cory Scott and Sean Brown placed first in the team time trial, with Baca taking second in the road race and third in the criterium. Scott placed second in the criterium and third in the road race.
In Men’s B, Caden Burross, Russell Terry, Erick Goytia and David Barrett placed second in the team time trial, with Burross placing third in the criterium.
After placing first in the Men’s D criterium and second in the road race, Collin Buerger was upgraded to the Men’s C division where he also took second in that division’s criterium. Anthony Sequera placed third in both the Men’s C road race and criterium.
The team is set to travel back to Austin on Feb. 23 to participate in the Wahlberg Road Race and Pace Ben Road Race.
