The men’s basketball program’s 9-point lead in the first half propelled them to an 83-72 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 9.
The Greyhounds attempted to make their way back into the game during the second quarter, but the Mustangs held on for the victory with a 46-44 scoring run.
Interior play proved to be the deciding factor in the game, as the Mustangs’ interior defense allowed only 18 points, while strong post play from Corbin Thomas (19 points, seven rebounds) paced the men to scoring 48 points in the Greyhound’s paint. The Mustangs also out rebounded the Greyhounds 38-32, including 16 offensive rebounds.
Kevin Grayer led the Mustangs in scoring with 24 points, as well as dishing out four assists and picking up two steals.
Derek Kaster led the Mustangs’ bench production with 13 points out of the team’s 26 bench points.
The Mustangs improve to 12-2 in the Lone Star Conference and 16-5 overall with the victory. They will continue their home stand today at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Abilene Christian.

Three women scored in double figures to lead the women’s basketball program to their 67-52 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 9.
Andrea Carter’s double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds led all players, while Kirsti Degelia and Dianna Jones chipped in 10 points.
The Mustangs took advantage of Eastern New Mexico’s sloppy ball handling, scoring 33 points off of the Zia’s 30 turnovers, with 15 turnovers coming off of steals.
Carter’s and Degelia’s quick hands came up with three steals each to lead the team, while Shatoia Gober and Lisa Hampton each picked off two.
The Lady Mustangs improve to 13-2 in Lone Star Conference play and 18-3 overall. Their next match will be today at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Abilene Christian.
