By Marco Torres
Hello my fellow Mustangs! My name is Marco Torres and I have the honor of serving as the Senior Class Senator for the 2014-2015 academic year.
I represent all seniors in the Student Government Association, and I have been spending time on campus meeting seniors and trying to get their input on what we as a class need to be successful at Midwestern State University.
While speaking to several students it dawned on me that MSU is NOT my university, as several billboards around Texas may lead the public to believe. Does this mean I dislike my university? Of course not! Attending Midwestern State has always been a dream of mine as a young child, but I realized that my dream can be better not just for me, but for all current and future Mustangs as well.
You are probably wondering what made me come to the decision to change MSU, but it’s simple. Take a look around campus and ask yourself, “Where is the school spirit?” Truth be told, we don’t have much.
I plan on tackling that issue head-on this year. I am working with Kyle Williams of the athletic department to implement the Stang Gang. This athletic club will offer a variety of ways for students to get involved and to support our teams. Secondly, I will be asking the clubs to break down their barriers and support one another. This is very critical to the success of my mission to increase school spirit.
Students actively involved on campus are crucial to this because they can spread Mustang spirit to other students. We may be members of Greek Life, religious clubs or athletic teams, but we are Mustangs first and foremost.
I have various projects in development for the student body. I’m taking the time and effort to change MSU for the better and change it from my university to our university. As I told the Student Senate in late April, “My name is Marco Torres and I don’t bull****.”
I’m looking for like-minded students to join me in this journey and together we can reap the benefits. We have to be open, resourceful and daring if we want to succeed. Please, if you have any ideas or questions contact me directly at 830-734-0926.

I wish you well in getting the Stang Gang off the ground. Please remember that far more than sporting events happen on this campus – there are free arts events, movie nights, and lots of special events held just for students. Getting more students out enjoying the campus activities is an excellent idea and I encourage you to continue your efforts to raise Mustang Spirit!
