At 6 p.m. on Feb. 12 the Freethought Alliance will be hosting Darwin Day in celebration of Charles Darwin’s 204th birthday. Edgar Shockley, president of the Freethought Alliance, said he hopes those in attendance will learn about evolution and will gain an understanding as to why teaching creationism in public schools is important.
“I hope to see 100 people attend,” Shockley, a junior in history, said. “Actually I’d love to see 3,000 attend and have to move into Akin.”
The Darwin Day celebration is free to students and guests. A panel of scientists and professors will take questions from audience members concerning evolution and scientific inquiry. Afterward, “Inherit the Wind,” a film that received four academy award nominations starring Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly, will be shown in Shawnee Theatre at 7 p.m.
