Sigma Lambda Alpha raises money selling burritos, quesadillas

October 16, 2018

Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, Inc. held a fundraiser selling burritos and quesadillas on Oct. 11 in the Clark Student Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Yerasly Duran, mass communication sophomore, Alaska Carrillo-Bell, biology junior, Gloria Villarreal, educational leadership graduate student, and Mariesam Isles, finance senior selling burritos and quesadillas on Oct. 11 in the CSC

President, Alaska Carrillo-Bell, biology junior said, “We do fundraisers because all the other stuff we have to do, such as retreat, we need money for. [We] raise money for us to have for emergencies, for us to have for future events, or for events like this one. [For example] next week we have Founder’s Week and that’s free for everybody.”

“For this were going to use all our proceeds to continue with our events, because we have a lot of events in October for MSU so all that is focused to buy new materials for them,” Gloria Villarreal, educational leadership, graduate student said.

SLΑ has done food based fundraisers in the past and finds them to be successful. This fundraiser in particular is popular and helped raise more than the average fundraiser. The sorority’s other main fundraiser would be the corn in a cup sale

“We usually average between $30-$80 dollars, but I feel like this one will surpass that.” Mariesam Isles, finance, senior said, “It generates a lot of profit for us because expenses are not as much.”

Sigma Lambda Alpha has more events coming up this year, and strives to raise the needed money throughout October.

“Our philanthropy is the Boys and Girls Club. We usually help sponsor events for them so the money we get is not necessarily just to use on us, we also use it to give back, so in that way [supporting SLA] will also help to give back,” Isles said.
