Running back Chauncey Harris took a four yard pass into the back edge of the end zone for the game winning touchdown after the defensive line held Texas A&M-Commerce to a field goal in overtime. Harris was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
After defeating the number one team in the LSC, a playoff berth could be in the team’s future.
“The division playoffs are based on the record and strength of schedule of a team,” Kristopher Bryant, student assistant coach, said, “The top six in each of the four regions get into the playoff.”
Though the MWSU football team is tied for second place with West Texas A&M, Angelo State, and Tarleton State, MWSU has a chance to be in the top six for the NCAA Playoffs. There are two sets of playoffs. The first is the LSC playoffs between our conference. The second is the NCAA Playoffs.
Michael Brodnex, student assistant coach, said the game on Saturday could be the deciding factor between being in the top six for the NCAA playoffs and four spots in the Lone Star Conference.
There are only six teams taken from each region. Right now the problem is that there the four-way tie for second place has to be broken up via the Lone Star Conference multiple-tie policy.
According to the policy, “the team with the most games won against other tied teams collectively will be awarded the highest seeded position,” meaning MSU needs to win against A&M-Kingsville to earn the highest seed possible.
The football team will travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville this Saturday for a start time of 7 p.m.
