Winter mini ruled success

The spring semester kicked off January 13th, but some faculty and students spent their Christmas break in the books by taking advantage of the first ever winter mini term offered at the university. Junior, criminal justice student Charles McLoyd took an economics course over the break.

“I liked it! I wish I could have took more, you know get some of these classes knocked out,” McLoyd said.

The winter mini term started December 16th and lasted until January 10th and all courses were only offered online. Vice president of admissions and institutional effectiveness, Robert Clark says he was pleased with the turnout of the winter mini.

“It was an experiment to begin with this first time around, we haven’t done that during the break between Christmas and the start of the spring semester and I think we have to call it a success,” Clark said.

About 140 students were only given Christmas and New Year’s off due to the rigorous schedule. But with their classes online, this wasn’t too much on an inconvenience for McLloyd. His advice to his fellow students is to jump on the opportunity to get back on track.

“I would advise to take it, I mean it’s three, four weeks and I mean anybody who has those breaks, they’re not doing much of nothing but sitting at home. I mean it’s a perfect time to get caught up, that’s what I did,” McLoyd said.

But Clark says with the tight schedule, these condensed terms are not made for everyone.

“It is an opportunity, on several levels for student to get courses out of the way, maybe make up for something that is a deficiency in their degree plan. But you really have to be able to pace yourself,” Clark Said.

“You know if you had a rough semester, you know you were able to take that class and kill it within three weeks and then you were back on top of your game,” McLoyd said.

Be on the lookout if you want to take some courses between the spring and summer sessions, Clark says they’ll be making that decision is the near future.
