The first week of classes is officially wrapping up.
Some people might think they lucked out with an awesome and easy schedule and some are absolutely freaking out about how intense and crazy this semester is going to be. Either way, this semester is off and running. Regardless of chaos, the university always does a great job with lots of activities to get students excited about MSU. This year is no different.
Students have so much pride at the beginning of the year. This campus has been flooded with excited new students, showcasing pride for their new school by wearing maroon and gold. Yet every year spring enrollment has substantially fewer than the fall semester. It is the responsibility of not only administration, but also students of this university to be proactive to keep enrollment up. It is our job to continue the Midwestern legacy by encouraging students to come back next semester and keep coming back every semester until they graduate.
We have a great thing here: small classes, low tuition, and tight bonds within organizations due to the small campus. Even with these advantages, each year more people are choosing larger universities. Midwestern is one of the few remaining universities in Texas that is still standing independently, not affiliated with an A&M or University of Texas system and that is something to be proud of. Anyone can be a Texas fan, but to really be a part of something is a pretty awesome. That is something MSU can give you, other schools can’t.
So be a solution, not a problem. If you see a lost freshman looking for a building, help them out. If you get a little frustrated, because you’re taking a prerequisite and dread it because “all the new freshmen,” remember you were a freshman at one point. That also includes transfer students. Help them out too. My suggestion is not to be catty to new students. The university has done a great job this week offering up a variety of activities during Welcome Week. Whether you checked out the ice cream social, learned a little bit about Greek Life or went to the mind reader Jonny Zvant, the university provided awesome opportunities to meet new people. Maybe you didn’t do any of those things, that’s just fine. The week isn’t over. Student Development, Greek Life, UPB have all done a great job coming up with activities for students, do your part and go. This is going to be a great semester!
