Men’s, women’s seeding set for LSC tournament
Both men’s and women’s basketball programs received the No. 1 seed for the 2013 Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, Texas from March 6-9.
The quarterfinal pairings are set to take place at 6 p.m. for the women and 8:30 p.m. for the men at the Allen Event Center. The women will take on the No. 8 seed Eastern New Mexico. The men will take on the No. 8 seed Texas A&M-Commerce.
Tickets for the tournament are available at Ticketmaster.com or at the gate. All session tickets are $60, and individual tickets will be $15, or $10 with a student I.D.
Freshman wins LSC pitcher of the week
Kat Batey nabbed March 5’s LSC pitcher of the week award for recording the fourth perfect game in school history on March 3 against Oklahoma Panhandle. The freshman pitcher retired all 15 batters she faced in the team’s 9-0 win.
Batey’s record improved to 7-2 after the Courtyard by Marriot Invitational from March 1-3. She allowed eight hits in 11 innings, as well as posting 10 strikeouts and holding the opposition to a .200 batting average in her starts against Northeastern State and Oklahoma Panhandle.
The softball team swept the five-game home-hosted invitational, improving to 16-4 on the season. LSC play is set to start March 8-9, when the team will travel to Portales, New Mexico to take on Eastern New Mexico.
The team’s next home stand will take place March 15-16 against West Texas A&M.
Oland lead’s men’s golf to second place
Sophomore Derek Oland tied for the top spot at the Las Vegas Desert Classic March 3-4 to lead the men’s golf team to second place.
Oland shot a 79 in the opening round and finishing strong with a 1-under par 71 in the final round to finish 6-over-par with a 150 total score.
The men posted a team total of 612 over the two-day tournament, placing second after West Florida edged them out with a team total 611 after the final round. The team held a five-stroke lead after the first day before West Florida made their move.
Santiago Gomez also performed well for the team, finishing at 9-over with a score of 153. Antonio Herran finished 10-over at 154 and Ian Gallagher finished 11-over at 155. Jeremy LeGuen rounded out the team score for the team with a 170 total score.
The team returns to action March 11-12 in Dardanelle, Ark. at the Falconer Classic.
Klutts wins first collegiate tournament
Senior Taylor Klutts claimed the top spot at the Las Vegas Desert Classic March 3-4 to lead the women’s golf team to a second place finish.
Klutts picked up her first collegiate tournament win shooting a tournament total 157.
The team held a seven-stroke lead over Grand Valley State (Mich.) after the first day of the tournament, but slipped behind to place second with a total of 642, four strokes behind GVS.
Kendra Whittley finished close behind Klutts with a total score of 158 to tie for second, while Lauren Romines and Lindsay Burkhart tied for eleventh with a score of 165. Brenna Moore rounded out the team’s performance with a score of 169.
The team has a week off before returning to action March 18-19 when they host the MSU Invitational at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
