After the men’s basketball team lost to in-state rivals Tarleton State 65-71 and the women’s team lost to West Texas 85-86 in overtime, they had to wait for the NCAA basketball committee to decide if they would continue in the post-season.
Derrell Gibbs said, “We just didn’t play our best, especially on rebounding and that’s a big key to our success. We put them on the foul a lot, too. We’re going to practice being tough and hitting the boards. Just being solid on defense and executing our plays on offense.”
The men’s team enters as the third seed in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament and the women made it in as the seventh seed.
“We are going to work on situational drills in practice and I think it’s just a mentality thing down the line. We’re excited because we get to play Mesa in a payback game and we’re familiar with the atmosphere,” Taylor Dowd, junior in education, said.
The women play the fourth seed Colorado Mesa University in Canyon, Texas and the men will play University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in Denver, Colo.
