135+ bands set to play Denton’s annual music festival
While some students have plans to soak up the sun near the beach this spring break, others will be forced to stay here in Wichita Falls.
For students looking for something cheap and fun to do over the spring break holiday, the 35 Denton Music Festival serves as a great way to kick off the break and get away from campus and Wichita Falls.
The festival kicks off March 7 and lasts through March 10 in various bars and nightclubs around Denton, such as Hailey’s and Rubber Gloves, as well as two main concert stages set up in the downtown square.
The annual music festival originally started as a showcase for Denton artists at the annual South by Southwest festival in Austin from 2005-2008.
The festival moved back home to Denton in 2009 as its own festival, and has hosted anywhere from 120-250 bands and speakers each year.
Past performers include Denton’s own Neon Indian and Sarah Jaffe, to big-name acts like Bun B, Big Boi of Outkast, Best Coast, Built to Spill and
The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Tickets for this year’s festival are still available, ranging from $55 for a 4-day wristband to $35 for a single-day ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the festival’s website at 35denton.com.
The festival will include several different genres of music that can appease any music fan.
R&B singer Solange Knowles, the Thurston Moore-fronted Chelsea Light Moving, Texas legend Roky Erickson and Killer Mike, headline this year’s festival.
Other notable acts playing the late-night shows include Jaffe returning to team up with the Dallas-based band The Cannibinoids, Com Truise, Beach Fossils, Talk Normal, Marnie Stern and Mac Demarco, and rappers Antwon, Fat Tony and –A.Dd+ and Astronautalis.
