The 85th annual Academy Awards were presented Feb. 24 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
Controversy surrounded the night, particularly around the show’s host, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.
From the controversial ‘We Saw Your Boobs’ during his lengthy monologue, to his various risqué sketches, MacFarlane’s performance was a heavy talking point the day after.
Aside from MacFarlane, another heavy topic was the snub of films, actors and directors not nominated or beaten out – none more talked about than Ben Affleck’s ‘Argo” winning best picture despite Affleck not being nominated for best director. As always, Leonardo Dicaprio was nowhere to be found on the best actor list for his portrayal of Calvin Candie in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained.’ Christopher Nolan and the entire cast and crew of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ may have been the biggest snub in the eyes of many fans, as the breathtaking end to his Batman trilogy was absent from any category.
Other talked about happenings were Adele bringing the house down with her performance of ‘Skyfall,’ and Jennifer Lawrence’s tumble on stage when accepting the Best Actress award.
“I was surprised that Les Miserables didn’t sweep the awards. The best part was when Life of Pi’s creative team was cut off by the Jaws theme song. I also liked when Adele sang. The worst part was when Daniel Radcliffe and Kristin Stewart presented together. You don’t mix Harry Potter and Twilight.” Jordan Campagna, Freshman, Undecided
“I’m in complete shock Leonardo Dicaprio wasn’t nominated for best supporting actor, considering Leo is one of the best actors of all time. Oscars are rigged fa sho.” Daniel Laudermilk, Sophomore, History
“The only movie I saw last year was (The Dark Knight Rises). It was a great movie, and a lot people loved it. I’m surprised it wasn’t nominated for something.” Joel Smith, Senior, Mass Communication
