This article is an absolute slap in the face to greek life and every student who has ever signed their name on the scroll or charter of any greek organization at MSU. I have stood by and watched and heard all of the crap that everyone was talking about while this went on, but i can’t sit quietly anymore. It’s ridiculous that people are actually “taking sides” and arguing about this. Greeks are turning on greeks and people outside of greek life are looking on and laughing. Renee, if you really gave a crap about greek life as a whole and weren’t just emotional because you lost, you wouldn’t have gone to the papers with this “issue”. This entire ordeal makes greek life look pitiful and if i wasn’t a member of a fraternity already, i wouldn’t ever want to be, and i definitely wouldn’t be joining a sorority as a female student. You have successfully made it look like every greek organization has a sincere hatred for each other and have decentralized greek unity from this campus for years to come. CONGRATULATIONS!!

In 2009, I campaigned for Homecoming King along with my friend Nicole Cates (she was nominated for Queen). Nicole made cup cakes, candy, and flyers and handed them out for the week that we were allowed to. I put flyers up around campus as well. There were many Sigma Kappas nominated that year and I can tell you that not one of them cheated. They got together and decided who, within their sorority, they were going to nominate and promoted them around the university. Some of them won their categories, some didn’t. Nicole lost to a Chi Omega (Valerie Flores). I was lucky enough to win and we all did it without cheating.

I don’t necessarily think it’s fair to label the entire sorority as “cheaters.” It’s not like they hacked into the voting system and changed numbers. All they did was do everything that they could do to insure a win for their organization. ANY student organizaton would have done the same thing. Also, I’m not sure it’s fair, or relevent for that matter, to compare the Sigma Kappas to a fictional bully in a Tina Fey film. I read several “Mean Girls” quotes in other articles pertaining to this situation and, while entertaining, throwing them in further invalidates the article.

I don’t think that getting people’s M numbers and voting for them is cheating if you have their consent. Yes, if they would have hacked into MSU’s computer system and stolen numbers, that’d be cheating, but they didn’t. If you give someone your M number and let them vote for you, then that’s your personal choice. In no way is that cheating.

It’s true, the Greeks do win more than other groups, but that’s because they promote eachother more than other groups. Coming from someone who was involved in many organizations other than my fraternity, Kappa Sigma, I can tell you that you will not find a closer bond between people than that of the brothers and sisters in the fraternity and sorority system. I would like to also point out that every one of the Kings and Queens of the past were involved in several other non-greek organizations as well. In fact, it is generally required to be involved in your university if you are in a Greek organization.

So, this year Sigma Kappa edged out the competition? Good for them. Maybe next year some other organization will dominate? I hope so! I think everyone should take it for what it is. It’s just homecoming. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s friendly competition for a week to see who can round up the highest number of votes. If you want to win, campaign! But don’t call someone a “cheater” just because they were better at spreading the word than you were.

Can we be adults pleaseOct 18, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Use your common sense and see that Greek Life is under 10% of the total student body, which means that if you didnt want a Greek to win, then the majority of the student body should have voted for the one non greek representative on both the King and Queen side. My point- if you didnt vote, than you have no right to complain about the outcome. As far as calling out Renee’s sorority sisters for not all voting for her, we live in America, the place where we have the right to vote for whom we want. I think that people are missing the fact of the article, was there cheating or not? In the end, I dont think it will really matter, its not like the king or queen recieve a scholarship, car, or anything of the sort, they get a title which is handed away after one year.

I am very disapointed in the fact that individuals think that it is ok to call girls sluts and fat. That is uncalled for and unprofessional. Yall are indeed being bullys and as someone who knows the current code of conduct if you are intemidating someone to the point that it could affect them you are breaking the MSU code of conduct.

If you really think that their was cheating going on, then prove it. Stop making excuses and blaiming everything on Greeks and SGA and be the change that you wish to see. We are all adults here so lets start acting like it.

People say that the Wichitan is trashy, but so are the comments you are all making so lets quit being hypocrites and lets start respecting one another.

I respect you Renee for having the courage to speak up. I also applaud Lacy (cheated or not) for being crowned the Homecoming Queen as well as the other two ladies for making the court . It may be “highschoolish” to some people, but to be in the top 4 women out of lets say 4000 girls is an accomplishment and an honor, so well done ladies.

This is a joke. How is this news? Do some investigated reporting before you just call someone a cheater to an entire city. That is defamation of character and is punishable by law. If Lacy wanted to sue civilly this could turn ugly. Renne better have some hard proof and not a self made text message. This seems like a petty girl mad that she didn’t get what she wanted. Now she used her connection to get it into the paper. COLLEGE HC IS A JOKE!! WE ARE ALL GROWN UP NOW!! There are winners and losers in all aspects of life. Dealing with defeat is what shapes a person. This Renee girl, who ever she is, really needs to step out of the situation and look at herself and her actions. You are not setting a good example for your sorority or fellow peers by complaining about a Home Coming defeat. You are a senior in college.. It is time to stop being all about yourself and start being a role model.

    Wow MSU, just wow…..

Is this what we’ve come to? Throwing insults and petty barbs at each other? Is this what we signed up for? Obviously education is the purpose of anyone that decides to pursue university, but I would think that a close second is the sense of community, and the wanting to be part of something great. I have no personal dog in this fight, but I believe that the attacks on Renee, and the Sigma Kappas have both gone too far.

How does this look to other schools? We have a decline in enrollment right now, and how will it look if we try to recruit for MSU, and none of us are united? All we’re doing is pointless bickering. Is someone going to try and do anything now? Or is this just going to be something that we all whine about for a week, and then forget about in a couple of days? If it is the former, then someone needs to take the necessary steps to do something about it (and I don’t know what those are). If it’s the latter, then just LET IT GO…

If it’s true that Renee’s own sisters are turning their backs on her…maybe everyone else should take notice and realize there is a reason. Sorority sisters are there for you no matter what, and for an entire sorority to turn away from one of their own…that speaks volumes about the individual, not the chapter, or greeks as a whole.

I would just like to congratulate the Sigma Kappa sorority on a clean sweep of the homecoming court. What a great achievement, there should be an article created giving them all the credit they deserve for winning. We all know what happens to fellow competitors when they lose, especially the ones who had no chance in the first place, they become bitter and will do anything in their power to reverse that decision in their favor. All the Sigma Kappas are great girls and knowing many of them like I do, i’m sure they are very proud of their success. SIgma Kappa’s are by far the best sorority and I will stand by that, all day long! Do you see any of the other competitors (who by the way have been very gracious) complaining? I don’t think so…. And to the person that classed them as ‘cows’ and ‘were good at cheating on rush and their boyfriends’ you’ll be pleased to be informed that they do quite the opposite! You need to take a long hard look at yourself before you judge others, then maybe look at yourself again and again and maybe once more, then one last time, oh and again!

All that anecdotal evidence! Should Sigma Kappa simply be happy if they had lost every single category, or would they be bitter and angry? It’s laughable that a college in the middle of nowhere is having such a dramatic ‘election’. Even more ridiculous is the fact that Sigma Kappa is showing up en masse to threaten and berate the person who exposed what could be a serious issue. Instead of showing appreciation to a person who seeks to ensure honesty from a school in the future, the sorority seems prepared to try and ruin anyone who is against them.

Please do continue acting as you are, it’s pretty hilarious.

I don’t see how this article resembles anything of a tabloid, The Wichitan doesn’t control the stories that come their way, the just report the facts that are presented to them. I’m not going to lie, I don’t really care all that much for or about homecoming but the fact that Renée stood up for not only herself butal against the system as a whole, that speaks volumes. I can understand the simple notion that not everyone is going to get along, but is this not out of control? I’m not close friends with Renée, so I have nothing to gain or lose from the following comment: take a look at all of you pointing the fingers and resorting to childish name calling…how mature is that? At least Renée has kept it pretty classy. She presented a case, didn’t resort to high school bullying tactics and she continued pressing on. I find it sort of ironic that those of you calling her immature can’t sign your name to your comments, instead you have to hide behind ‘anonymous’ or phony names. Man up to your comments if that’s what you truly believe.

I could care less if Renée lost by 1 vote or 1,000 votes — the simple fact cheating was involved is what I care about. It takes a great deal of courage to stand up against those who speak ill of you. I don’t consider Renée a sore loser, rather somebody irritated by the means the nominees went about collecting votes, anyway you look at it, that’s wrong. I’m not a Greek, so maybe I’m misinformed, but I thought you guys were about ‘family’ and standing as one? That doesn’t seem to be the case as Renée’s own ‘sisters’ have turned their back on her.

Appalled by GreeksOct 17, 2012 at 1:09 PM

I think it’s VERY sad on the part of these commentors who are blaming the paper for this. A newspaper’s job is to REPORT THE NEWS; they don’t make it, they only publish it. For them to catch flack from this article is the Greek’s way of closing ranks and trying to defend what little image they have left on this campus.

I also find it extremely ironic that although sororities pledge to be loyal to one another, at the moment that something happens to tarnish their image, they turn against one another. As a former Greek that used to belong to one of the two organizations mentioned in the article, I can tell you from first hand experience that image is everything to these girls. A girl gets pregnant? Force her out of the sorority. Not enough minorities in the group? Pick a random girl. Quota in recruitment is everything.

I’m not taking sides in this matter, but I do feel like Renee is being bullied, both by the people who commented on this post and her own so called “sisters”. If you look on some of the social media sites, you can see some of the girls that are supposed to be her “sisters” turning their back on her. They’re not supporting her, they’re going to ostrichisize her and claim it’s for the good of “Greek Unity”. Fact is, there’s no “Greek Unity” unless it’s to save face. They backstab and talk about girls in other sororities CONSTANTLY.

I hope that we all learn a little maturity from this fiasco, and that we realize what true friends really are.

You are right, the individuals are responsible for their own comments HOWEVER the Wichitan also has a disclaimer which partly reads: “The Wichitan retains the right not to publish comments, remove or edit them without notice.” So the moral and ethical actions for this “newspaper” would be to do so and delete all comments and further disable any cyber bullying from happening. Otherwise it is clear the Wichitan supports such commenting and is actively enabling cyber bullying. Not something I would want my university newspaper to be known for.

Check your own facts, friend. Not only did Renee report the allegations to the SGA PRIOR to the event, but others did too. And you can’t really gather both sides of the story if one side won’t talk. So are journalists supposed to stop reporting if one side refuses to answer? Well, I guess Watergate should have been left under the rug, along with many other scandals.
And to you “respectonlyrealstories” (if that is your real name…), The Wichitan is not responsible for these hateful comments, your peers are. It’s not their fault we go to school with a bunch of 5-year-olds. But no, this story should not be deleted because someone is offended. THAT is irresponsible journalism. The public has a right to know, no matter how small and stupid you think the story is.
A note to all Mass Communication students: I guess we are screwed. We need to find new interests because apparently we can’t do our jobs. You know what, nevermind. Screw it.

This has all the makings of a great story; two girls, gossip, controversy and a crown. The problem is it lacks the basic journalistic elements – fact-checking, source gathering and basic syntax and grammar rule following. Ms. Hofmann has created a one-sided retelling, though I’m not sure because of the lack of proper quotation marks, of a story which really should appear as an editorial. Some of the resulting comments show a complete disregard for your fellow students, using name calling, vulgar and offensive language negates any comments you may have. (some of you should become familiar with two terms, slander and libel)

For future reference, any knowledge one had of improper conduct should have been reported PRIOR to the actual event, waiting to see the end result of anything then questioning the procedure sets one up for failure and disappointment.

As students why are you wasting your time name calling, pointing fingers and embarrassing one another? University leaders, why are you allowing your student body to behave this way? Others see this and are not impressed.

This is getting embarrassing. Both Gamma Phi and Sigma Kappa are wonderful organizations with wonderful girls. Calling any of these ladies cows, cheaters, or whores is repulsive. Sig Kaps are the most well known which equals most votes. Will this even matter to the people involved in a few years? Probably not. It’s too bad that we have to focus on tearing each other apart rather than supporting one another. These are the things that give Greeks a bad name.

It’s funny to me that you’re talking of “Greek Unity” but what about SISTERHOOD unity? It seems to me that your chapter has a history of throwing girls under the bus when you all feel that they no longer serve their purpose of making the Gamma Iota chapter’s image squeaky clean.

Time and time again they have forced girls out either because they didn’t fit the image of the chapter, or they ganged up on a girl (like they’re doing to Renee now) because they like to form little “cliques”. I have met other girls from different chapters and they can’t believe what’s happening. I mean, having your chapter advisor tell their “sister” that they smell and that they need to loose weight during recruitment? That’s just low.

They’ve driven several girls off, and then talk about them behind their back. They spread rumors about their “sisters” to get the girl to leave. It’s pretty sad to me that during recruitment, their chapter advisor told a girl that she stank and that she needed to shape up to boost the image of the chapter for the PNMs! I normally wouldn’t say anything because I had respect for the National Organization, but after seeing how they’re hurting Renee, I couldn’t stop myself from saying anything.

You’re right, I shouldn’t have grouped all of the greeks together. Because for every bad thing I hear about them, I do hear two or three good things. And I work with some amazing greek people. So I do apologize.
With that being said, in instances like this, a few can very easily define many. As I pointed out before, when the other articles were written, many (and I do mean many) stopped “supporting” Mass Comm because of the stories from the Wichitan. The Wichitian staff does does not define my major. They are actually a very small group of people (some even with OTHER majors). So yes, the tables have turned, but again, it’s not all the greeks people need to be calling out. Just the few that might be guilty of voter fraud (however petty some may feel it is).

Stop grouping all Greeks together. Not every person wearing letters agrees or took part in these actions. A few do not define the many. Being Greek on a campus is a part of who you are. Stop putting them on a peddle stool and then knocking them down every chance you get. If MSU got rid of the Greek system, the next biggest organization on campus would be under scrutiny. No one is perfect, but the group shouldn’t be punished by a few really bad apples.

Greeks are supposed to be leaders on campus and I’m not seeing any of that here. I see a bunch of hateful children throwing names back and forth at each other. We’re all in college. I could have sworn we were mature enough to leave all of the bullshit back in high school. Instead of attacking one another, you should be working together to figure out a solution so this type of thing doesn’t happen again.

Just leaving this tidbit of information here: October is National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month.

Have a nice day. And remember that sometimes your words are more hurtful than your actions.

I can’t believe you guys. Seriously, you all hide behind the names “Anonymous” and other similar names but almost none of you are brave enough to brave enough to put your name up. I can’t believe that you are all being so low as to bring Renee’s family into this. Seriously? The people who need to grow up are not the people who were involved in the publication of this article, it’s the little children leaving their hateful, tasteless, unnecessary comments.

Whoever it was that posted the comment about cyber bullying, you are appreciated and heard. At least some at this school understand the real harm that can come from the horrible things that are spewing out of your mouths.

I love reading how “greeks all stick together” but yet I read these comments and I can’t help but think you are all full of crap. I know someone in almost every greek chapter and I know that you are all malicious and backstabbing. But that’s okay, because you can come together when someone NONgreek calls you out (remember the GPA story?).

Renee didn’t ruin homecoming. Your petty efforts to win a petty prize did.

Another thing is, have we looked into this evidence? It looks a bit fabricated to me, if you were going to post something that proved your point, wouldn’t it say “I voted for Lacy and Zach.” Why try to prove a point if it doesn’t even show evidence that you got voted against ?

    That’s all

Sigma kappas and chi omegas are the only sororities I know on campus. And I would’ve voted for Lacy or Krissy because of it. Never even heard of Renee before this so I’m so confused where she is even coming from haha but all of this is annoying. Everyone stop caring. And whoever said homecoming court is stupid, I agree. This is college not homecoming. I’m shocked this article was even made or even listened to Renee. What did she go in the office and say “hey I didn’t win and I think the winner cheated? Can you write a story?” Like what? Goodness. I don’t think Greeks are stupid but I think they need to calm down. This article needs to be deleted, it’s too embarrassing for MSU and were in college not highschool. This is something Star magazine would write.

I’m sorry am I The only person that sees that Lacy Talley was the obvious winner for this homecoming ?! I understand if all of the other opponents complain but Crissy is the only one that stood a chance against Lacy, all of the other sigma kappas won this straight up. I’m not saying they are the best sorority on campus but they obviously did what they needed to campaign for this homecoming, and yes I did get a text saying “did you vote for homecoming?”, not saying “hey, give me your M number and email address so I can vote !”. That is personal information that should never be given out. Leave these girls alone and quit being mad because they pulled a clean sweep of this homecoming ! This is ‘Merica and we can vote however we choose

Lol this has got to be a joke. Honestly, who cares who won? I wasn’t even aware that colleges had homecoming courts, which I’m sure wont last much longer after this unnecessary drama. It’s always the sore loser that ruins it for the rest of the kids. This is a college. Not a middle school. If Renee is honestly so concerned that she didn’t win homecoming queen and its that important to her, I don’t even want to know where her other priorities stand. The sigma kappas are the most well known sorority on campus and also happen to be the most attractive. Of course when voters see pictures they are going to judge by looks. Hate to break it to you Renee, but posting this article was one of the stupidest things you could’ve done. Now not only are NOT homecoming queen, but you’re also disliked by a majority of the student body for causing unnecessary drama about something that happened in the past. No body likes a sore loser, but apparently mama never taught you that lesson.

Greek or not, what is the point of having a homecoming court? It’s all pointless and is sure to cause drama! How many times have we used someone else’s name or email to sign up for something that would only benefit ourselves. To me, its not a huge surprise! Let’s face it, if you were running(all hypothetically speaking) you would probably TELL not ask but tell your friends to vote for you, you would even be willing to get their m number and do it for them so they wouldn’t have any excuses as to why they can’t. These students that gave out their number should’ve been more careful and thought things through. If it were just friends of people who were on the ballot I really don’t see it as cheating but asking random students is definitely not fair to the other people running.
Anyways, I really don’t see the point of making this such a huge deal. It’s college and we have much bigger fish to fry!

They’re not just a “school newsletter”. It’s bigger than that and in order for a greek to have a published statement representing their organization they have to have permission from nationals. I’m sure she would love to comment but she’s making a wise decision to not continue any harm.

First off, screen shots of a text message from a phone are not valid, it is very easy to change someones name in your phone to another persons name in a matter of 10 seconds. Second off, Lacy “ran” with Anthony Gallina, if she was in fact “taking M-numbers” then Anthony would have also won homecoming king. I just think this is very embarrassing not just for Renee, but also for the Wichitan itself. If I wanted to read about pointless and useless drama I would go to the nearest Walmart and pick up a magazine. We are all in college. The point of college is to graduate, get a career, and become successful, not to get our panties in a wad about winning homecoming queen or king. If Renee had heard rumors about all of this then why didn’t she say anything earlier? Why wait until she lost? Something for everyone to think about. The Wichitan and Renee are bullying a member of Midwestern State and I am VERY appalled.

The Wichitan isn’t bullying Lacy; all they are trying to do is actually present HER SIDE of the story, and if she has anything to say for herself. They’re not harassing her. If you look at the following comments, it seems that Renee is the one being bullied. Also, Renee DID say something to the SGA beforehand.

It is sad that Greeks are being called out like this but I really think its the organization that is hosting homecoming nominations that should be under the microscope….!!!!SGA is the culprit!!!! Two reasons! 1. THEY ARE UNPROFESSIONAL IN REGARDS TO THE HOMECOMING NOMINATION SYSTEM!!!! My explanation and experience: I was hoping to make the ballot and asked all my friends to nominate me. Two of my friends that are sophomores nominated in the morning. Later that afternoon two of my other friends that are ALSO sophomores went to nominate me and they denied them the chance to nominate me with the excuse that they had to be seniors to nominate me. Can only seniors nominate homecoming king and queen or can everyone? Make up your mind! Make sure your procedures are properly communicated to all the persons responsible for handling nominations!! 2. THEY LACK THE INTEGRITY OF KEEPING SUCH A SACRED TRADITION CONFIDENTIAL!!! My explanation and experience: I received a text message from a really good friend on Friday after nominations were due, asking me why I hadn’t told her I made the Homecoming Ballot! I was confused and replied,” I didn’t make the ballot?” She heard from another nominee that my name was on the ballot. She then told me that I should check the door of the SGA office but when I went there was nothing posted. I was bummed and had to wait until Monday to call just to find out I really didn’t make the ballot. If i didn’t make the ballot why did another nominee even mention my name? Did the SGA staff share that information with her? Did they alter the Homecoming Ballot? Because as far as I’m aware if I didn’t make the ballot nobody but SGA should even know my name or that I was “close” to making the ballot!!

You are NOT a leader on this campus and you are NOT showing any respect for your peers. You, my friend, are only bringing down this campus by participating in so many organizations. If this is an act your comfortable with, I am shocked.

At least Renee has the courage enough to stand behind her words by putting her name out there. Also, just because you are of the opinion that Renee isn’t a leader, it doesn’t mean that everyone else thinks that too. Renee has done a lot for many people, including her RA duties at Killingsworth. Plus I’m sure the only majority that you are referring to are the Greeks that are upset that Renee even said something to begin with.

Renee is an awesome person. She’s done a lot for the campus, has made everyone feel welcome, and remembers them. She came forward to say, hey, I think there was cheating, and this is why. It’s not because she was hurt, it’s because unlike most people it seems, she’s an honest person. I applaud her for doing it. If I had known about it, I would have said something as well. Cheating gets you no where.
Even if it wasn’t every member of Sigma, they were still caught. And even ONE person cheating shows badly to the WHOLE sorority. The fact that all of them won, honest or not, does seem suspicious, especially when it’s proven that a Sigma member already cheated to win.

And even if people were actually giving her their M number to vote! They knew what they were voting for and obviously willing to vote for her and the other Sigma Kappas on ballot!

This whole article is completely pointless since homecoming is already over. Homecoming is supposed to be fun and this is turning it into a big social network unneeded dramatic situation. People honestly don’t even care about homecoming and I don’t think this article is going to influence anyone. Nobody cares anymore. I am a Sigma Kappa and we were very surprised on winning everything, especially me considering our competitors are great girls. Saying that Sigma Kappa cheated is going a little too far, seems to me people have their feelings hurt and are trying to make false accusations. The text part could be sent by anyone, considering there is no names shown in the text. I am ashamed this has come to this and ashamed of the greek retaliation against one another. Greeks are supposed to be leaders on this campus and we should be unified as one. That is all I have to say about this and I hope it is resolved because nobody cares about homecoming anymore, considering it is over. WIsh the best for all greeks and hope this is all blown over immediatly! “No matter the letters, we are all greeks together”.
